Driftwood is an unincorporated community within Hays County. It has its own post office and zip code but it is, essentially, a scenic and peaceful suburb of Austin. Located about 30 minutes from Austin Bergstrom airport, 20 minutes from downtown Austin, it is situated in the rolling hills and oaks of the Hill Country. While it is an area of some population growth, it remains a community where one is as likely to see a vineyard or a longhorn as they are to see a rooftop.
Earliest settlers arrived in the Driftwood area about 1850, and the community was established by 1880. “Downtown” Driftwood is really simply an intersection of FM 150 and Elder Hill Road. There, one will find the community center, Driftwood Church, established in 1884, and the adjacent cemetery which contains grave sites of at least eight veterans of the Civil War.
It is Driftwood which is the home of the acclaimed Salt Lick Barbecue. Also in Driftwood, one will find the Driftwood Winery and Damien Mandola’s exquisiteTrattoria Lisina, a lovely Tuscan-style eatery situated in a picturesque vineyard.
There are several beautiful residential developments in Driftwood, including Rim Rock, Panther Creek and La Ventana, which is surrounded by Triple C Ranch, one of the last large parcels of land remaining intact in the Driftwood area. The Hill Country Conservancy is working to permanently conserve this 1,242 acre property so that it can remain in its natural state forever, offering the La Ventana community scenic Hill Country views, permanent wild life habitat, and no threat of development.
